Short answer: On a charter boat, Gulf red snapper season is the federal for-hire season. In 2026 it runs June 1 through October 25 and closes at 12:01 a.m. on October 26, 2026. That is the window we fish for red snapper out of Crystal River on the 35′ offshore boat.
NOAA sets the for-hire dates each year and can change them mid-season, so check the current rules before you book a snapper trip. The 2026 season is published in NOAA’s April 1, 2026 bulletin.
Why charter dates differ from private-boat dates
Florida runs a separate red snapper season for private boats. In 2026 it is May 22 through July 31, then September 1 through October 4, then a list of weekends and holidays running into January 2027. Those are the dates you see in the news every spring.
They do not apply to charter trips. Charter boats that fish for reef fish in federal waters follow the federal for-hire season instead, in both federal and state waters. When the for-hire season is closed, a charter cannot keep red snapper anywhere, including on the state’s fall weekends.
The trade-off usually works in your favor. The for-hire season opens June 1 every year and runs as one stretch, 147 days in 2026, instead of a summer block plus scattered weekends.
Red snapper limits in 2026
Minimum size is 16 inches total length. The bag limit is 2 red snapper per person per day, and captain and crew keep zero, so a group of 4 anglers can bring home up to 8 snapper.
NOAA can close the season early if the annual catch target is reached, or reopen it later if it is not. In 2025 the for-hire season closed at 12:01 a.m. on September 16, then reopened December 11, 2025 through January 1, 2026.
Which of our trips target red snapper
Red snapper want hard bottom, relief and current, and out of Crystal River that means a long run. In 2026 our best snapper fishing has come from the 80 to 100 mile range, and by July the fish were holding in 120 feet of water and deeper. Two trips on the 35′ are built for it.
- 80 Mile Max: from $2,995 for up to 4 anglers, $100 per extra person up to 6, 9 hours, 6:00 or 7:00 AM start. This is the trip built for snapper season, with red grouper and mangrove snapper filling out the box.
- Florida Middle Grounds 120 Mile: from $3,495 for up to 4 anglers, $100 per extra person up to 6, 9 hours, 5:00 or 6:00 AM start. The largest snapper we see all year come from the Middle Grounds, along with limits of red grouper and, in September 2026, gag as well.
Both trips run on the 35′. The 27′ catamaran’s inshore and nearshore trips are not sold as snapper trips, so if red snapper is the goal, book the 35′. Outside the season the fish are still on the structure and go back in the water; grouper, mangrove snapper and hogfish carry those trips.
